Kia Receives Top-10 Ranking For Initial Quality in 2013 J.D. Power and Associates Study

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2013 Initial Quality Study (IQS) has ranked the Kia Soul and Kia Sportage as leaders in the Compact Multi-Purpose Vehicle and Sub-Compact CUV segments, respectively.  And, for the first time, Kia ranks among the automotive industry’s top 10 nameplates for initial quality.  The 2013 Soul ranked first in the Compact MPV segment for the second consecutive year, and the Sportage tied for the highest ranking in the Sub-Compact CUV category.

“Kia Motors is committed to building vehicles that are defined by award-winning design, fun-to-drive performance and world-class quality, and the Soul and Sportage epitomize these attributes,” said Byung Mo Ahn, group president and CEO, Kia Motors America (KMA) and Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG). “Achieving top-ten status within the industry reflects just how far the Kia brand has come in improving the ownership experience and vehicle quality for our customers and advancing value to new levels of sophistication across our entire model line.”

According to the IQS study, Kia made substantial improvements with gains that outpaced the industry average and resulted in the brand’s best-ever score. The annual report analyzed responses from 83,442 respondents about 230 vehicle models and attributes across eight categories, including the driving experience, engine and transmission and a broad range of quality problem symptoms reported by vehicle owners.

Maintenance Monday Tip: check your windshield wipers!

The summertime is notorious for sudden, violent thunderstorms. When buckets of water are beating against your windshield, you need wipers that really work. Even more so at night, when a rain storm can decrease visibility to 15 or 20 feet in front of your vehicle.

Weekly “Maintenance Tip”: Maintain Your AC!

If you've ever lost your air conditioning on a hot summer day, then you know what a big difference a little cool air makes. The best way to tell if your air conditioner has a problem is if it can't generate or maintain air temperatures that are 50 degrees Fahrenheit below the ambient outside air temperature.

Kia Reaches For The Top

With 47 new or refreshed vehicles coming by 2017, it was inevitable Kia would take another step up the product ladder which it has done with the 2014 Cadenza.

The Cadenza is considered a "near luxury" sedan with a similar size and a host of features found in the $50,000 plus bracket like the Mercedes E-Class or Audi A6.

In fact, the Cadenza starts at $37,795 for the "Base" model and $44,995 for the Premium.

Kia more sensibly sees the Cadenza as going up against Acura TL, Nissan Maxima, Lincoln MKZ and Buick LaCrosse. But Kia had a big chart at the Napa press preview showing its competitors don't have all the available extras as the Cadenza, which is something Im sure Kia sales people will be pointing out to potential buyers.

I suspect the Premium will be the top seller because of what it offers for the price, but Ill get to that a little lower down.

The Cadenza is considered a full-size sedan and it is in every sense of the word, especially the back seat. During our drive time in San Francisco and the Napa Valley, I made a point of getting in the back and I had more than enough legroom.

Later while driving, I had to stop smartly and that caused my travel bag to slide forward off the back seat and onto the floor. Its a big bag and normally it gets wedged between the front seat back and the rear cushion. In this case, it plopped onto the floor and looked rather lonely with all the room around it.

Kia/Hyundai is the only automaker to produce its own steel and in the Cadenza, high-strength steel makes up 60 per cent of the chassis.

Kia said at the Cadenza press launch this ensures only the highest quality steel is used in the Cadenzas construction.

There is one engine, Kias new 3.3-litre direct injection V6 producing 293 hp and 255 lb/ft of torque driving the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission featuring paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

Using regular gasoline, fuel consumption is rated at 11.2/7.4L/100 km city/highway.

One thing that caused some discussion among autowriters present for the press launch in the Napa Valley of California was the steering.

My Quebec co-driver found it "vague" while Graeme Fletcher of Motoring TV called it one of the best hed driven. I did note that FlexSteer (that offers three response modes in the latest Kia offerings) was not on the Cadenza. I was told that's because it was an older model and it could not be refitted with FlexSteer.

I know the roads in Napa fairly well and one of those is the Silverado Trail that runs north-south beside the Napa River.

Twisting and turning, but with pavement as smooth as glass, you can really put any vehicle through its paces, which I did.

Bottom line was the steering was precise and predictable with a hint of on-centre lightness which one expects from electric power steering. The feel of the Cadenza steering fits the nature of the car as buyers in this segment expect comfort in a sedan not the input effort one needs in a sportscar.

Standard equipment is extensive, the partial list includes: rear parking sensors, rear camera, multimedia interface Navigation, AM/FM/CD/AUX/USB, SiriusXM satellite radio, Bluetooth wireless technology, Infinity 12-speaker audio system, chrome outside door handles, solar glass, projection headlights, front fog lights, LED daytime running lights and positioning lights, LED light bar tail lights, power heated body coloured outside mirrors, power folding outside mirrors with LED side repeaters, front and rear splash guard, dot matrix LCD cluster and trip computer.

But it was with the Premium that the Kia blurs with line between "near luxury" and the real thing.

This car is loaded. Again, just a partial list of goodies includes: panoramic sunroof, HID headlamps with adaptive front lighting (AFLS), triple stage cooled/ventilated drivers seat, dual stage rear heated seats, power tilt and telescopic steering wheel, memory seats, memory outside mirrors, memory steering column, drivers seat knee extension, heated steering wheel, wiper deicer, power rear window curtain, Supervision TFT LCD instrument cluster, premium Nappa leather seats, 19-inch alloy wheels, smart cruise control, blind spot detection, Lane Departure Warning System and Electric Parking Brake (EPB).

One of the things that caught everyone's attention is the use of "hydrophobic" glass on the front side windows. They are treated with a special, permanent coating that repels water and dirt.

And you like to golf, you can take a foursome and their bags in the 451-litre trunk.

Suspension is MacStruts at the front and a multi-link setup at the rear. Part of the suspension comprises "dynamic dampers" that automatically soften when cruising but stiffen when more handling performance is wanted.

Im not a fan of adaptive cruise control but many are, especially at the luxury level. On the Cadenza speed can be set between 30-180 km/h.

I feel the same about lane departure systems because I find the bell/chime/whatever is annoying and distracting plus it adds to the stress level in the middle of a critical situation. Luckily, it can be turned off by a button located to the left of the steering wheel.

The Cadenza marks new territory for Kia and it is very much the new boy on the near luxury block.

But based on what we've seen so far, Kia will probably be one of the big boys on the block before very long.

2013 Kia Optima And Sportage Earn AutoPacific Vehicle Satisfaction Awards

Two of Kia Motors America’s (KMA) most popular models were recently named to AutoPacific’s annual Vehicle Satisfaction Awards (VSA).  The 2013 Optima sedan was named most satisfying Mid-Size Car and the sporty 2013 Sportage was heralded as the most satisfying Compact Crossover SUV by the trusted automotive marketing and product-consulting firm.  The 17th annual survey based the results on responses from more than 52,000 new-vehicle owners.

“There is no doubt that competition is stronger than ever and winning the AutoPacific Vehicle Satisfaction Awards is further proof that Kia is offering a strong product lineup for today’s car buyers,” said Michael Sprague, executive vice president of marketing & communications, KMA.  “The Optima’s combination of stunning design and tremendous value continue to resonate with customers while the Sportage continues to set the bar very high for the compact crossover segment in terms of packaging, performance and style.”

AutoPacific’s VSA identify the most satisfying vehicles for sale in the U.S. market and assist new-car buyers in making informed vehicle purchase decisions.  The survey measures owner satisfaction with 51 separate attributes ranging from interior comfort and convenience to fuel economy and performance.  “Vehicles that score highest in the Vehicle Satisfaction Awards are delivering value and satisfaction across a wide range of attributes,” noted president of AutoPacific, George Peterson. With 294 models and 33 brands from which to choose a new vehicle, AutoPacific’s VSA helps buyers sort through the increasingly complicated selection of products on the market.  “The VSA clearly shows buyers which vehicles are at the top of the class they are considering,” continued Peterson.

Road trip tip: Have entertainment for the ears!

Good music is essential. Whether you keep it on an iPod, CDs or old-school 8-tracks, make sure you have variety. If you listen to the same songs repeatedly for days, you'll lose your mind. Audio books are also great entertainment. Not only do they make the miles fly by, but they can help dupe your friends and family into thinking you're well-read.

Kia Motors Introduces New Flagship Sedan In National Marketing Campaign Set To A Remix Of David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance”

For decades, former classmates have gathered at reunions across the country to catch up and answer the age-old question of “whatever happened to…?”  After 18 consecutive years of market share growth, Kia Motors America (KMA) is turning heads with the arrival of its most powerful and technologically-advanced vehicle – the 2014 Cadenza – which navigates the streets of New York City in a new national ad campaign before confidently delivering its stiletto heel-wearing driver to her 20-year reunion as stunned onlookers realize they may have not noticed her in the past, but now she is truly “impossible to ignore.”

Set to InFiction’s remix of “Let’s Dance,” originally by David Bowie, and featuring high-end fashion model Teresa Moore, the 30-second “Reunion” spot gives viewers a host of reasons to take notice of Kia and the new Cadenza, chief among them are the flagship sedan’s eye-catching European-inspired styling, first-class appointments, advanced technology and dynamic driving characteristics.

“The Cadenza signals a new era for the Kia brand – it takes people by surprise when they see and experience all of the technology and premium amenities it has to offer, and the class reunion metaphor provides the perfect storytelling platform for a vehicle that that stands out from the competition and symbolizes a remarkable coming-of-age narrative,” said Michael Sprague, executive vice president, marketing & communications, KMA.  “‘Reunion’ reflects on just how far Kia has come in an extremely short period of time and speaks to our commitment to advancing value to new levels of sophistication.”

Created by David&Goliath, KMA’s advertising agency of record, “Reunion” can be viewed now at YouTube.com/Kia, and the fully integrated marketing campaign will incorporate TV, digital, print and social media components.

Is Kia working on a sporty convertible?

It's been a number of years since we last heard rumors about a drop-top Kia, but as the South Korean automaker continues to grow into new segments, why not stir things up again? Fan site Kia-world.net got its hands on what is claimed to be an exclusive drawing of the Kia Pro_cee'd GT Cabrio.

This rendering looks exactly like what we'd picture a topless version of the three-door hatchback to look like, but until there's any official information, we'll keep this filed under "we'll believe it when we see it." The idea of a Kia convertible sounds good to us, especially if it looks like this, but we're still waiting for the sporty model that lead designer Peter Schreyer said could happen "sooner or later" back in 2010.

Maintenance Monday Tip: don’t let your car run low on fuel!

Driving your fuel-injected engine frequently on fumes could cause hundreds of dollars in repairs, and leave you stranded on the side of the road. A good rule of thumb – keep the fuel level above a quarter tank to keep your car running well, and to avoid running out of gas!
