Kia Racing Chases back to back wins at Barber Motorsports Park in Round Two of the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge

IRVINE, Calif., March 29, 2012 - Kia Racing and Kinetic Motorsports return to Barber Motorsports Park for round two of the 2012 Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge (CTSCC) aiming for back-to-back wins at the beautiful, purpose-built road course carved into the hills outside Birmingham, Ala. Coming off a thrilling race and photo finish at Daytona in January, the team is optimistic about the Koups' chances to once again stand tall on the podium at Barber.

"We are really looking forward to going back to Barber where we had our first GRAND-AM win with Kia last year," said Jönsson. "Both Forte Koups should be very strong in Birmingham, and following the racing debut of the new Kia Optimas last weekend in St. Petersburg, which resulted in two top-ten finishes in our first World Challenge series event, the entire crew is energized to return to Barber and take the next step in defending our 2011 Team and Driver championships."

Something else to watch for this weekend: Andy Lally has a chance to make motorsports history at Barber by becoming the first driver with 100-career GRAND-AM podium finishes. Following his most recent CTSCC podium with Kia and his Rolex series victory in the 24 Hours of Daytona, Lally has climbed the podium 98 times in his decorated GRAND-AM road racing career. At Barber, Lally will again be doing double duty, co-driving the No. 10 Infinity Audio Kia Forte Koup with Jönsson and piloting a GT-class Porsche in the Rolex series.

Last year, joined by co-driver Michael Galati, Nic Jönsson and the No. 10 Forte Koup dominated the CTSCC round at Barber much to the delight of a large contingent of team members from Kia's nearby manufacturing plant – Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG). Jönsson and Lally visited KMMG on Tuesday, March 27 to talk about Kia's expanding motorsports program and sign autographs as the team made final preparations for Barber.

"Returning to Barber feels a lot like coming home for Kia Racing," said Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing & communications, KMA. "With our U.S. assembly plant just down the road in West Point, Ga., our strong dealer body in the area and Kinetic's home base nearby, we are looking forward to seeing a lot of Kia Racing fans at the track and hoping to give them another great show by repeating last year's historic performance."

Round two of the CTSCC at Barber Motorsports Park starts Saturday, March 31 at 5 p.m. ET. Kia Racing fans can check out live race status updates, photos and videos at facebook.com/kiaracing. Televised coverage of the race begins at 12 p.m. ET on Sunday, April 8 on SPEED.

Kia Motors Posts Largest Gains in Fuel Economy and CO2 Reduction among all Automakers in the U.S., According to 2011 EPA Fuel Economy Trend Report

IRVINE, Calif., March 15, 2012 - In its commitment to produce sustainable and fuel-efficient vehicles, Kia Motors America (KMA) has "had the biggest improvement in adjusted CO2 and fuel economy performance from MY 2009 to MY 2010" of any automaker, according to the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) latest fuel economy trends reporttitled, "Light-Duty Automotive Technology, Carbon Dioxide Emissions, and Fuel Economy Trends: 1975 Through 2011." Kia's fuel economy gain from 2009 to 2010 was 11.6 percent, while its reduction in CO2 emissions was 10.1 percent, beating all other major manufacturers by considerable margins based on the EPA's most recent data. In addition, the report shows Kia as tied for the highest Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) at 27.0 miles-per-gallon for MY 2010. Kia is ranked number two for MY 2010 CO2 values, ahead of traditional leaders such as Honda and Toyota.

"As an industry leader in fuel economy, Kia is committed to providing safe, high-quality vehicles that are socially relevant to consumers," said Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing & communications, KMA. "Our goal is to stay ahead of the industry by applying innovative technologies such as direct-injection and turbo charged engines to advance our efforts and continue improving on the benchmarks Kia has set in the sustainability realm."

Kia Motors' EcoDynamics philosophy has created a global alternative fuel and powertrain research program to develop advanced fuel-stretching and emissions-cutting technologies. In 2011, Kia introduced the brand's first-ever hybrid vehicle in the U.S., and the 2013 Rio and Rio 5-door will be the first vehicles in the subcompact segment to offer fuel-saving Idle Stop and Go technology.

The EPA report summarizes key trends in CO2 emissions and fuel economy for gasoline- and diesel-fueled personal vehicles sold in the United States, beginning MY 1975. Overall, the automotive industry's fleetwide average real world MY 2010 CO2 emissions and fuel economy have marked slight improvements over MY 2009 and the most favorable levels since this analysis began in 1975.

2012 Kia Soul

2
As a mom who is always on the lookout for an "anti-Mom" vehicle, the Kia Soul definitely piqued my interest. At first, I questioned its "age-appropriateness" for a lady like me with a baby in the backseat, but after 5 minutes behind the wheel, I really didn't care.

The 2012 Kia Soul isn't just young and cool; it's convenient, economical and fun for a family to ride around in.

To many people, the Soul is the "hamster car," but it's so much more than that. It's a fantastic family car disguised in a compact car's body. The new, more powerful four-cylinder engine in the 2012 model makes this little car quicker on the road, and it's definitely ready to merge right on to the highway. It's also a snap to parallel park and easy to maneuver through neighborhoods with twisty roads and in and out of parking lots all over town. Its fuel efficiency makes it a desirable commuter car, too.

About three days into my test drive with the Soul, I noticed I was listening to the radio a little louder and running errands a little more often.

The Kia Soul starts at $13,900 for a base model with a six-speed manual transmission, but my top trim level Soul!, with a six-speed automatic transmission and navigation, costs $22,850.

EXTERIOR

At first look, the Soul looks like a miniature SUV. It's really more of a squared-off station wagon. Not only does its shape set it apart from a traditional station wagon, but it also adds a roominess and functionality that makes a big difference. Bonus points should be awarded for its fun styling, too. While the Alien Green paint color of my test car was definitely not my color of choice, imagining it in Shadow Black made me think that as far as these boxy wagons go, the Soul is definitely the most attractive.

From the outside, the Soul looks small. A family may wonder how they'll all fit into this little box on wheels. The great news is the Soul is taller than a wagon or sedan, but it's not high off the ground. This strikes the perfect balance between being easy for small children to enter and exit independently, as well as being high enough to load even smaller kids into their child-safety seats without any awkward bending. The combination of the low floor/high roofline and square door openings make it easier than expected for adult passengers to get in and out of it, as well.

There is a potential deal-breaker for families who like to pack it in: The cargo area is small. A double stroller definitely won't fit in it, and if you're one of those people that keeps things in the trunk for just-in-case moments, you'll definitely disregard the Soul. However, with the generous storage bins underneath the cargo area floor and being able to fit my stroller in the back by standing it up on its side, that issue was resolved for me. No stroller? Your groceries, sports equipment or suitcase will fit just fine. The 60/40-split folding rear seats allow you to fold a seat or two down to increase the cargo space.

The Soul comes with a standard 135-horsepower, 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that gets an EPA-estimated 27/35 mpg city/highway. There's also a larger engine — 160-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder — that gets 26/34 mpg. It's standard in the Soul+ and Soul!. Coupled with a need for only regular unleaded gasoline, it's economical for a car that warrants such good times on the road.

SENSE AND STYLE

Family Friendly (Not Really, Fair, Great, Excellent): Great
Fun-Factor (None, Some, Good Times, Groove-On): Good Times

INTERIOR

The Soul's interior is quite surprising — all the moms who laughed at me as I endorsed its family wagon capabilities soon stopped after getting inside it. That boxy shape on the outside sure affects how things function on the inside; what you end up with is a roomy cabin.

Although the Soul has the capability to seat five, four passengers are probably more ideal. For my family of three, everyone had plenty of room, and another passenger in the backseat would've had no complaints if they joined us. Legroom was good for my front-seat passengers with a rear-facing child-safety seat behind them. Cupholders are available for four passengers, and there is a fair amount of storage for a car of this size.

What's even better is the Soul's interior styling is just cool. My top-trim level Soul! had optional leather seats, but I wish it would've come with the hounds-tooth cloth seats. Yes, hounds-tooth! It's something to get excited about for anyone who values style and a little personality. And, the Soul! can be equipped with navigation, push-button start with smart key and an upgraded sound system.

From the outside, the car may look like it's geared toward a teenager, but with even more available luxuries like heated seats and an multimedia system with a backup camera, the Soul can satiate families who appreciate upgraded features. Remote keyless entry and Bluetooth connectivity come standard.

IT'S THE LITTLE THINGS THAT COUNT

Storage Compartments (Puny, Fair, Ample, Galore): Fair
Cargo/Trunk Space (Puny, Fair, Ample, Galore): Fair

SAFETY

The 2012 Soul has been named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. To receive this safety nod, a car must earn the top score of Good in frontal-offset, side-impact, rear and roof-strength crash tests. It received an overall rating of four stars of five in crash tests by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It got four stars out of five in frontal and rollover crash tests and five stars in the side-impact crash test.

You might not expect it, but child-safety seats are easily accommodated by the Soul. Front-row legroom wasn't compromised too much when I had my rear-facing infant-safety seat installed in the back. There are two sets of lower Latch anchors in the outboard seats, but they're buried in the seat cushions, causing a struggle when trying to access them. The Soul's high ceiling offset this frustration because I never had to worry about bumping my head while moving around to get the car seat installed properly.

The Soul's standard safety features are front-wheel drive, all-disc antilock brakes with brake assist, active front head restraints, an electronic stability system with traction control and six airbags, including side curtains for both rows. A backup camera is standard on the highest trim level, but available on the other trims.

Driving the Kia Rio B-Spec Race Car

Kia1

A Kia Rio race car. Frankly, that just sounds absurd. And yet, here I am folding myself into just that on a small track carved next to a rural airport 13 miles east of Nowhere, Florida.

The new-for-2012 Rio, like its other recently updated Kia siblings, represents a stunning transformation of improved quality, strong engines and dynamic design. It demands a change in perception for this once-maligned brand and nameplate, and to further enhance that effort Kia has decided to dip its toe into motorsports.

Last April, Dan Edmunds ventured to Thunderhill Raceway to drive the pioneering Honda Fit and Mazda 3 B-Spec race cars. In case you don't want to spend the time revisiting that, here's a nice little nugget...

"Representatives from Mazdaspeed and Honda Performance Development put their heads together to create a rules framework for a "B-Spec" race series in which the Mazda 2, Honda Fit and their (subcompact/B-segment) competitors can race in all four major racing sanctioning bodies -- SCCA, Grand Am, NASA and World Challenge. Other manufacturers have been invited to join in."

Kia accepted that invitation on the heals of its two road racing championships in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. Kia's B-segment car is the Rio, and together with its racing partner Kinetic Motorsports, they created the B-Spec kit you see here. Potential racers start off by buying a base Rio hatchback then immediately double its price with the $14,000 package of roll cage, racing seat, quick-release steering wheel, racing harness, race shocks, lightweight wheels, spec-series semi-slick tires, oil sump pan expansion kit and complete build instructions. If you don't feel like going the Ikea route, Kinetic will do it for you in their Georgia shop for an extra $6,000.

To achieve the full B-Spec race car you see here, they'll also strip out just about everything from the car's interior for a net weight savings of about 900 pounds. That's pretty much where you'll get any performance improvement from as the B-Spec series specifies that the engine and transmission must go unaltered. Same with the brakes (besides pads).

As I haven't driven Honda's and Mazda's B-Spec cars, I can't exactly offer any opinion on how the Rio stacks up against them. However, I can definitely report that they've created a wickedly fun little car.

The Brandford Long Course at the European Rally School and Motorsports Park is a short, technical track perfectly suited for low-powered, agile cars like these. A Corvette or AMG Mercedes would be pointless here. I start on street tires as the track is still damp from a ubiquitous Floridian morning shower, and although the suspension modifications impress, it's not until the slicks go on later when the Rio B-Spec really shows how quickly it can tackle this course. As Dan Edmunds discovered, the Fit and Mazda 2 pulled more than 1 g on the skidpad, and I'd wager the Rio would do the same thanks to these tires.

Immediately, the transmission surprises. Is it a short-throw, narrow gate racing gearbox? No, but it's precise and the clutch take-up is well sorted, which should be a surprise to anyone who has driven a Kia manual in the past (the Forte's is abysmal). When I eventually ended my laps, the pits were filled with disbelieving journalists asking questions of whether this was truly the stock Rio transmission. It is indeed.

The steering does a similarly good job of not drawing attention to itself, as not once did I find this stock electric system to be betraying the car in any way. Again, maybe I'd feel differently after driving the Rio's competitors, but in a vacuum, the steering's certainly acting the part. As the number of laps and confidence increase, so does my speed and my appreciation for the idea of the B-Spec racing series. Small cars like these can be a hoot, and are wonderful learning tools as well, as you can't simply rely on power to go fast. You really get the feel for the car, its grip and its ability to rotate with the throttle. And rotate it will, since its interior liquidation results in the weight distribution shifting further forward.

As my laps come to an end, I walk away with a few conclusions. First, I really want one of these tracks in my backyard someday. Second, I really want to come back and take on Magrath and Takahashi in a B-Spec racer challenge. In fact, buying a couple of these would be a great way for a rich guy to spend weekends with his friends. But most importantly, the idea of a Kia Rio race car is no longer absurd.

The ultra-popular CUV enjoys this accolade for a second year in a row. Lauded for its outstanding drivability, functionality, refinement and comfort, the Sorento has defined a number of milestones for Kia, including becoming the first model in the product line to surpass 100,000 sales in a single year as well as being Kia's first U.S.-built1 vehicle at Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG) in West Point, Ga.

"Sorento's achievement of being recognized as one of the '10 Best Family Cars of 2012' by Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com is a testament to its exceptional safety, comfort and feature content," said Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing & communications, Kia Motors America. "As Kia's best-selling vehicle, Sorento's low cost of ownership has resulted in strong consumer ratings, making it a favorite among family buyers."

Editors from Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com evaluated vehicles based on several main criteria important to family car buyers, including safety, child-friendliness, comfort, economy of operation – which factors fuel consumption, insurance premiums and repair costs – and resale value. The kbb.com editors selected the vehicles that offer the best combination of these characteristics and the highest overall value for everyday families.

Kbb.com editors underscored the Sorento's available three row seating capacity and highway fuel economy of 32 miles-per-gallon2. "Good fuel economy is only part of the story," said Jack R. "The Sorento starts under $24,000 and offers a voice-controlled infotainment system plus a great big panoramic moonroof."
